“Why Our Story Must Be Told,” a discussion of 2025 survey data on public knowledge of the World War II Japanese American incarceration, will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 5 p.m. PT on Zoom.
According to a recent YouGov poll, the incarceration is considered unjust or shameful by about two-thirds (66%) of Americans, and only 13% of Americans regard it as justifiable. In 1942, a national opinion poll showed that 93% of Americans supported the government’s actions.
Speakers: Karthick Ramakrishnan, founder and executive director, AAPI Data; Karen Umemoto, Ph.D., professor and endowed director’s chair, UCLA Asian American Studies Center.

They will address the following questions: What does the public know about JA history? How can we use these insights to deepen collective understanding, amplify underrepresented voices, and advocate for inclusive curricula and public programs?
